The highest paid college principals and chief executives in 2019/20 have been revealed by the Education and Skills Funding Agency today.

Sitting at the top of the list, published within the agency’s annual college accounts spreadsheet, is New City College boss Gerry McDonald who earned a basic salary of £235,000 in 2019/20.

Following in second was Weston College principal Paul Phillips who took home £222,000, and in third was LTE Group chief executive John Thornhill who wasd paid £214,000.

There were six college leaders in total who were paid a basic salary of £200,000 or more last year.

FE Week has excluded colleges that were led by multiple principals or chief executives in either year.

    It reminds me of Fawlty Towers: “Don’t mention the pension arrangements” !! …….. Its best not to highlight that most Principals will leave with £1m + pension accumulated mostly from tax payers contributions! ……. oh and for good measure, so will most of their senior management colleagues working with them!

      Is there a problem with them amassing a significant pension? It’s a big job with a lot of responsibility. I would also add that many Principal’s, bar the few extremes, are paid at a level that looks very proportionate.

        There are no problems at all, the society seems to have problems with just teachers and doctors’ pay which is between 30-40K, as well as teacher’s holiday as if their job is not stressful with a lot of responsibility! If people have issue with it, the door is open and they are hiring, they can get a degree, start teaching training and enjoy the benefit that they are complaining about.
